How Long Should a Movie Be?

There is a big discussion in certain circles about the length of feature films today. The Batman clocked it at almost 3 hours while Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness was 2 hours and 10 minutes. Some people think that films at too long now, although It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World was a whopping 3 hours and 30 minutes, albeit with an intermission, and Gone With The Wind was just short of 4 hours, also with an intermission. Zach Snyder's Justice League is 4 hours and 2 minutes, but with six "chapters" to break up the action. (Plus, it's on a streaming service so you can pause the action whenever.)

Personally, I don't mind if the movies are long, as long as it's appropriate to the movie and can maintain your interest. Some are too long just because the director won't cut enough unnecessary material to tighten up the picture.

I actually prefer longer movies because I feel like I'm getting my money's worth. Besides, if you go to all the trouble to create a wonderful universe in a movie you should be able to explore it a little. I do kind of wish they would bring back the intermission for bathroom breaks on longer movies. Plus our theater has popcorn and soda refills for free, so that would be a good time to take advantage of that.

At some point, though, the story might fit better as a short series on streaming. There are plenty of examples of 6 episode series that could fit together as a giant movie, and if you binge-watch it, it's pretty much the same thing.

What do you think?
